Although I love the recipe on how to make soft boiled eggs that I learned as a child, as the years passed I have tried from time to time to experiment and see how other people were doing it. In fact one of the recipes I sometimes use is the one that my wife taught me back when we were dating and she decided she would bring me breakfast in bed. It was I nice sentiment but I caught her while she was cooking and she captured my attention when I saw she was boiling the water but had not put the eggs in. So I stayed on and discovered her way of how to make soft boiled eggs. That’s why I call it the feminine way and here it is:
The feminine path on how to make a soft boiled egg:
1. Fill in a sauce pan of water that will cover the eggs with about an inch of water. But don’t put the eggs in quite yet – isn’t that a bit unnerving?
2. Bring the water quickly to boil and then gently lower the heat until the water is simmering.
3. Quickly lower the eggs in the water – I have found that if you first wash them with warm water they tend not to crack as much.
4. Leave them to simmer for exactly 1 minute.
5. Turn of the fire, put a lid on and leave them for 7 minutes.
6. (my own addendum) Put them under a clear running tab of cold water for 5 minutes otherwise they will keep on cooking.
Now let me just give you one last fair warning: 80% of the times I have used this method of how to make soft boiled eggs they came out just fine, but the other 20% of times they came out all messed up, one time the egg white was barely cooked and another time, this was during a particular hot summer, the yolk came out perfectly cooked. So you might want to try this method but pay attention that although you might follow these steps on how to make the eggs to the letter they still might not come out right.
And here is my sure fire, 3 steps method on how to make a soft boiled egg, or many soft boiled eggs, your choice:
1. Put the egg in a sauce pan covered with water and quickly bring to boil.
2. As soon as the water starts to boil reduce the temperature to a gentle simmer and leave them like that for 3 minutes and 30 second – NASA material wright here!
3. Put the eggs under a cold running tap of water for 5 minutes.
OK, I have to admit that even using my own feelings about how to make soft boiled eggs I have had problems with them cracking but I feel that it has happen less often then with my wives method. Still it is the method I prefer and I might as well be biased so don’t take my word for it: experiment yourself, see what you come up with and if you find a better way on how to make a soft boiled egg let me know too.
